RENNES, France, July 14 (UPI) -- Germany's Linus Gerdemann captured Stage 7 of the Tour de France Saturday, and is the overall leader in the world's premiere cycling race.
With a time of 4:53:13 in the grueling 123-mile stage, Gerdemann overtook Switzerland's Fabian Cancellara for the symbolic yellow jersey, ending Cancellara's eight-day run as the leader.
"Today is the biggest day in my career," said a baby-faced Gerdemann after first stage win of his career. "I only believed in the win with (328 yards) to go. I had cramps and was over my limits."
In Saturday's stage, Cancellara finished over 22 minutes behind Gerdemann.
Spain's Inigo Landaluze Intxaurraga, who finished 40 seconds behind Gerdemann, is second overall, trailing by 1:24.
Spain's David De La Fuente Rasilla was third in Saturday's stage, 1:39 behind Gerdemann, and is third overall, 2:45 behind the leader.
It was the first of a grueling three-stage stretch through the Alps and went from Bourg-en-Bresse to Le Grande-Bornand.
