ROME, July 14 (UPI) -- A South African amputee finished second in the 400-meter run at a track meet this week in Rome.

Oscar Pistorius clocked at 46.9 seconds in the race against full-limbed runners at the Golden League meet using carbon-fiber blades attached below the knees.

The 20-year-old Pistorius lost his calves to birth defect as a child, but he is determined to run in the 2008 Olympics.

The BBC said the International Association of Athletics Federation has yet to decide if the artificial legs constitute an unfair advantage.
