NEW YORK, July 12 (UPI) -- The New York Mets Thursday fired hitting coach Rick Down and hired Rickey Henderson as his replacement.
Henderson, Major League Baseball's all-time steals leader, had a 25-year playing career. He joined the 3,000-hit club in 2003 while playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
This is his first coaching job in the majors. The 48-year-old Henderson was a spring training instructor for the Mets.
The 10-time all-star compiled 3,055 hits, 1,406 stolen bases and almost 2,300 runs while playing for nine different teams.
He spent parts of two seasons with the Mets in 1999 and 2000.
"I was surprised," Down told The New York Post Wednesday night. "A month ago after 50 games, we were pretty much leading the league. I was the best thing since sliced bread. We get some injuries and things happen, and I get fired."
