Ferrer moves into Swedish Open quarters

BASTAD, Sweden, July 12 (UPI) -- Second-seeded David Ferrer needed a third set Thursday but managed to advance to the quarterfinals of the clay-court-Swedish Open.

Ferrer was pushed by Nicolas Massu before prevailing 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 and moving into Friday's quarterfinals against Gilles Simon. Simon was an upset winner Thursday over seventh-seeded Juan Monaco 6-4, 6-4.

Fourth-seeded Carlos Moya also advanced, stopping Thomas Johansson 6-3, 6-3. He goes against sixth-seeded Robin Soderling on Friday. Soderling posted a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Fernando Verdasco in the tightest of the second-round matches.

Friday's other quarterfinals send fifth-seeded Filippo Volandri against Olivier Rochus and Luis Horna against Nicolas Almagro.
