MUNCIE, Ind., July 12 (UPI) -- Ball State officials said Thursday Ronny Thompson had resigned as men's basketball coach because of a violation of NCAA rules.
Thompson, son of former Georgetown coach John Thompson, coached Ball State to a 9-22 record in his only season on the job.

The school's athletic director said Thompson had submitted a letter saying he would resign. A news conference will be held Friday to discuss the situation.
School officials had previously said Thompson and his assistant coaches attended voluntary summer workouts, which is against NCAA rules.
