NEWPORT, R.I., July 9 (UPI) -- Vincent Spadea defeated fellow American Justin Gimelstob 6-4, 6-3 Monday in the opening round of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.

The second-seeded Spadea reached the final here in 2005, while Gimelstob was last year's runner-up to Australian Mark Philippoussis, who is not defending his title this week.

In an upset, Croat Roko Karanusic beat sixth-seeded Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili 6-4, 6-3. Eighth-seeded German Michael Berrer defeated Australian Chris Guccione 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

In other first-day play, Canadian Frank Dancevic beat American Kevin Kim 6-3, 6-3 and South African Wesley Moodie beat Brazilian Thiago Alves 6-3, 6-4.

The Hall of Fame will induct four new members at the tourney Saturday, including recent players Pete Sampras and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario.
