Pitchers Haren, Peavy get All-Star starts

SAN FRANCISCO, July 9 (UPI) -- Two California pitchers -- Oakland's Dan Haren and San Diego's Jake Peavy -- were selected to be the starters for the All-Star Game in San Francisco.

Haren, a right-hander, is 1-3 this season with a 2.30 earned run average while Peavy, another right-hander, is 9-3 with a 2.19 ERA.

The starting assignments were announced at a news conference Monday by Detroit Manager Jim Leyland, who is leading the American League team, and St. Louis Manager Tony La Russa, who is heading up the home National League team. The managers also listed their batting lineups.

Leyland will have Seattle center fielder Ichiro Suzuki lead off followed by New York shortstop Derek Jeter, Boston first baseman David Ortiz, New York third baseman Alex Rodriguez, Los Angeles Angels right fielder Vladimir Guerrero, Detroit left fielder Magglio Ordonez, Detroit catcher Ivan Rodriguez, Detroit second baseman Placido Polanco and Haren.

The National League lineup is: New York shortstop Jose Reyes, San Francisco left fielder Barry Bonds, New York center fielder Carlos Beltran, Cincinnati right fielder Ken Griffey Jr., New York third baseman David Wright, Milwaukee first baseman Prince Fielder, Los Angeles catcher Russell Martin, Philadelphia second baseman Chase Utley and Peavy.
