
LONDON, July 8 (UPI) -- Roger Federer won a hard-fought match against Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon on Sunday, capturing his fifth straight men's title at the Grand Slam event.
The top-seeded men's tennis player defeated the second-seeded Spaniard 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-2 on his way to becoming only the second man to win five consecutive Wimbledon titles.
The impressive sports feat previously had been accomplished by Swedish tennis star Bjorn Borg, who was dominant at the event from 1976 to 1980.
Federer's victory also marked his 11th Grand Slam title and comes as the 25-year-old Swiss athlete is ranked No. 1 in the world. It win also increased Federer's overall record at the All England Club to 38-4.
Federer now has won 34 straight matches at Wimbledon and his most recent victory gives him a record 54 consecutive grass-court wins.
