LONDON, July 8 (UPI) -- Kimi Raikkonen captured the Formula One British Grand Prix Formula One race Sunday at Silverstone, England.
His No. 6 Ferrari crossed the finish line 2.459 seconds ahead of Fernando Alonso (McLaren).
The victory was Raikkonen's third of the season and 12th of his F1 career.
"We had a good car all weekend," said Raikkonen. "Once we knew we had enough fuel, I was able to close on Lewis (Hamilton) and try to overtake him."
Hamilton (McLaren), a local hero, was the favorite after his pole victory. He had to fend off Raikkonen at the first corner of the first lap, and Hamilton's lead over Raikkonen was one second after four laps.
Hamilton stayed around until he made a pit stop on Lap 16, when the winner took control.
The pit error led to a third-place finish for Hamilton.
Robert Kubica (BMW Sauber) was fourth, and Felipe Massa (Ferrari) finished fifth, despite passing eight cars in the first four laps.
