
DETROIT, July 8 (UPI) -- Gary Sheffield hit a solo homer and tallied two RBI Sunday as Detroit beat Boston 6-5, completing a three-game weekend sweep.
His 21st homer this season gave Detroit a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, and a ground-rule RBI double in the fourth produced Detroit's final runs.
Detroit's Marcus Thames and Carlos Guillen also homered, both in the third. Thanes' 10th homer was a solo blast and Guillen's 14th was a two-run shot. Sean Casey added one RBI.
Sheffield finished with three hits and Craig Monroe added two hits for the Tigers, who have won seven of their last 10 games.
The winner was Nate Robertson (5-6). Todd Jones recorded his 22nd save.
Boston's Julio Lugo hit a solo homer and an RBI double. David Ortiz, Mike Lowel, and Jeff Bailey all had one RBI, with Bailey hitting a solo homer in his major league debut for the Red Sox.
The loser was Daisuke Matsuzaka (10-6).
