KOHLER, Wis., July 7 (UPI) -- Tom Watson held on to his three-shot lead through 54 holes of the U.S. Senior Open at Kohler, Wis., despite carding a 1-over 73 Saturday.
Watson is at 7-under 209 through three rounds. Loren Roberts is second at 4-under 212 after also shooting a 73.
Former European Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance had a 1-under 71 and is tied for third with John Ross (70) and Vicente Fernandez (74) at 3-under 213.
Roberts sank a six-foot birdie putt at No. 11 to close within one stroke when Watson, who hit one of the longest drives of the day at the par 5 11th hole, was short on his second shot and pitched his third over the green.
"I hit it a lot of different places today," said Watson, who finished second to Allen Doyle last year. "I'm very grateful to shoot 1-over par with some of the places I hit it today."
