CONWAY, S.C., July 2 (UPI) -- Cliff Ellis, who has more than 600 wins as a coach, has been hired to coach the men's basketball team at Coastal Carolina.
Ellis, 61, takes over from Buzz Peterson, who left Coastal Carolina to become director of player personnel with the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats. Ellis is the sixth basketball coach in Coastal Carolina history.
Ellis coached Auburn for 10 seasons, building a 186-125 record, including a 29-4 mark in 1999 when the Tigers won the Southeastern Conference championship. He also coached at Clemson from 1984-94, helping the Tigers to their only Atlantic Coast Conference title.
Ellis owns a 534-337 record as a Division I coach and is 612-349 overall. He is 47th all time among Division I coaches in victories.
