CINCINNATI, July 1 (UPI) -- The Cincinnati Reds Sunday fired Manager Jerry Narron and plan to name Pete Mackanin interim manager for the remainder of the 2007 season.
The team announced the firing after the Reds fell to St. Louis, 11-7.
The Reds have the worst record (31-51) in the majors this season and are on pace to lose 100 games for the first time since 1982.
In parts of three seasons as manager, Narron has led the Reds to a record of 157-179.
Mackanin -- who will become the 59th manager in Reds history -- managed the organization's Triple-A Nashville team from 1990-92.
He has been with the Reds since last year as an advance scout.
Mackanin, 55, was third base coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1997-2000 and bench coach in Pittsburgh from 2003-05. He managed the Pirates' final 26 games in 2005 after Pittsburgh fired Lloyd McClendon.
Narron was the second big league manager to leave his post Sunday, following Seattle Mariners' Manager Mike Hargrove's surprise announcement that he is resigning. Narron is the second manager to be fired this season, following the Baltimore Orioles' sacking of Sam Perlozzo.
