SEATTLE, July 1 (UPI) -- Jose Guillen hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth Sunday as the Seattle Mariners beat Toronto, 2-1, for its eighth straight win.

The veteran shortstop hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to make a winner of out-going Manager Mike Hargrove, who resigned shortly before the contest.

It was Hargrove's 1,188th career victory.

The winning pitcher was closer J.J. Putz (1-0).

Frank Thomas hit his 14th homer of the season, a solo shot in the top of the seventh, giving him 501 for his career. Matt Stairs and Adam Lind had two hits apiece for the Blue Jays, who suffered their fourth loss in a row.

The losing pitcher was Jeremy Accardo (1-3).

Seattle starter Jeff Weaver yielded an earned run and seven hits in eight innings, while Toronto's Shaun Marcum scattered six hits over 6 2/3 scoreless innings.
