MLB: San Diego 3, LA Dodgers 1 (12 inn.)

LOS ANGELES, July 1 (UPI) -- Jake Peavy checked Los Angeles on one run and five hits in seven innings Saturday night, as the San Diego Padres beat the Dodgers, 3-1, in 12 innings.

Peavy struck out six and walked one. Royce Ring (1-0) got the win, pitching one-third of an inning in relief, and Trevor Hoffman earned his 23rd save of the season.

Josh Bard had two hits and one RBI, and Mike Cameron had two hits and scored a run for the Padres.

Brad Penny also had a strong outing, pitching seven innings for the Dodgers while giving up just one run on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Brett Tomko (1-6) gave up two runs on three hits in one inning of relief to take the loss.

The Dodgers' lone run scored on Nomar Garciaparra's home run in the fifth inning.
