
KANSAS CITY, Mo., July 1 (UPI) -- Jon Garland gave up an earned run and seven hits in seven innings Sunday as the Chicago White Sox beat Kansas City, 3-1.
After spotting Kansas City a 1-0 lead through three innings, Chicago got run-scoring hits from Josh Fields and Andy Gonzalez in the fourth for a 2-1 lead.
Paul Konerko hit a solo homer in the fifth, his 15th home run of the season.
Gonzalez had three hits, and Konerko and Fields had two hits each for the White Sox, who have won four of their last five games.
Garland (6-5) walked one and struck out four. Bobby Jenks earned his 22nd save this season.
Kansas City's Alex Gordon hit an RBI single in the bottom of the first.
Esteban German and Billy Butler had two hits apiece for the Royals, who have split their last 10 games.
Loser John Thompson (1-1) surrendered two earned runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.
