Haas withdraws at Wimbledon

LONDON, July 1 (UPI) -- Tommy Haas withdrew from the Wimbledon Championships Sunday because of a torn abdominal muscle.

The 13th-seeded German suffered the injury in his third-round victory Friday against Russia's Dmitry Tursunov. He was scheduled to face top-seeded and defending champion Roger Federer in the fourth round Monday.

"I wish I could have been on Center Court but it's not to be," Haas told the BBC. "It would have been a nice opportunity. I'm just going to go home now and get this thing under control."

Haas was sidelined for two months before Wimbledon with a shoulder injury. With Haas' withdrawal, Federer advanced to the Wednesday's quarterfinals in a walkover to next face the winner of Monday's match between former French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero and Janko Tipsarevic.
