Wie withdraws at from Women's U.S. Open

PINEHURST, N.C., June 30 (UPI) -- Michelle Wie withdrew from the Women's U.S. Open Golf Tournament at Pinehurst, N.C., Saturday with an ongoing left wrist injury.

The 17-year-old Hawaiian amateur had played poorly at the rain-plagued second major on the LPGA tour before the second withdrawal in her last three appearances. It came after she hit just two shots Saturday.

Wie made six bogeys through nine holes and was 17-over par when she left.

"I definitely have to re-evaluate," Wie said. "I obviously don't want this to happen again. It's going to get better, but I'm going to have some good days and I'm going to have some bad days."

She shot 11-over 82 in Thursday's first round.

The injury forced her controversial withdrawal from the last month's Ginn Tribute at Mount Pleasant, S.C.

Wie tied for third place at last year's U.S. Women's Open. She finished in the top 40 in each of her previous four starts at the event.
