INDIANAPOLIS, June 22 (UPI) -- Tyson Gay Friday night ran the fastest 100-meter time in the world this year, capturing the highlight event at the USA Track and Field Championship.
Gay, an early favorite for next year's Olympics, qualified for this year's World Championships with a time of 9.84. Trindon Holliday finished second in 10.07 and Walter Dix -- who had been the world's fastest this year at 9.93 -- was third at 10.09.
The top three in each event become eligible for the world meet in Osaka, Japan.
In the women's 100, Torri Edwards posted an easy victory with a time of 11.02. Edwards continues to rebound from a 15-month suspension for using an illegal substance.
Other feature attractions saw six-time national runner-up Suzy Powell finally break through with a win in the discus (198-11); two-time world champion Dwight Phillips capture the long jump (27-5 1/4); and Bernard Lagat out-sprint Matt Tegenkamp down the stretch to win the 5,000-meter run (13:30.72).
Just 90 minutes before capturing the 5,000, Lagat ran a qualifying heat in the 1,500-meter run.
