USA reaches Gold Cup title match

Published: June 21, 2007 at 10:50 PM

CHICAGO, June 21 (UPI) -- Goals by Frankie Hejduk and Landon Donovan, plus a questionable call, put Team USA into the finals of the Gold Cup Thursday night with a 2-1 win over Canada.

Hejduk and Donovan gave the Americans a 2-0 lead in the first half, with Donovan scoring on a penalty kick.

The United States, unbeaten against Canada in the last 22 years, appeared headed for an easy triumph. But Iain Hume brought the Canadians within a goal in the 76th minute and another score was negated in stoppage time by an offside call.

The ball appeared to deflect off American defender Oguchi Onyewu and into the net, which would have made the offside meaningless. Mexican referee Benito Archundia stood by his call despite intense Canadian protests.
