NEW YORK, June 20 (UPI) -- Jason Giambi has until Thursday to make a decision about when to face a committee investigating the steroids issue.

The deadline for the New York Yankees' designated hitter was set by Commissioner Bud Selig. Several reports Wednesday said the union and MLB officials were still discussing the parameters under which Giambi would meet with members of Mitchell's committee.

Giambi currently is sidelined by a left foot injury.

New York Newsday reported Wednesday Giambi may be nearing a decision to meet with Mitchell or his representatives.

Last month, Giambi told USA Today about his steroid use in the past.

Mitchell's committee was formed nearly 16 months ago to report to MLB officials about the problem.

This year, he has been negotiating with the union to obtain medical documents and player interviews, but has had little success.
