BLOOMINGTON, Ind., June 19 (UPI) -- Indiana University head football coach Terry Hoeppner died Tuesday morning at age 59 of complications from brain cancer.

Hoeppner died at Bloomington Hospital with family members at his bedside. His death came about 18 months after he began cancer treatment. He had been on a series of medical leaves from the football program after two surgeries for a brain tumor.

"Coach (Hoeppner) died due to complications from a brain tumor for which he had been treated surgically and therapeutically over the past 18 months," said Indiana University team physician Dr. Larry Rink.

Hoeppner was named Indiana University's 26th head football coach in December 2004 posting a 9-14 record over two Big Ten seasons. He signed a contract extension in December after a 5-7 campaign.

"Terry's fight was courageous and will serve as an inspiration to those who have known him," said Indiana University Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan in a statement.

Hoeppner is survived by his wife, Jane, three children and four grandchildren.

Last week the university announced that assistant coach Bill Lynch would assume the title of Indiana University's head football coach for the upcoming season.
