Julian Tavares (4-4) picked up the victory by giving up two runs on six hits in seven innings.

Boston roughed up Barry Zito (6-7) for five hits and seven runs over 5 1/3 innings.

In his first trip ever to Fenway Park, Barry Bonds had a single and a walk in three at bats. He remains eight home runs away from tying Hank Aaron's all-time big league record.

Bonds barely missed a homer in the first inning when a shot down the right-field line twisted foul.
