
BIRMINGHAM, England, June 15 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Jelena Jankovic rallied for a third-round win Friday at the rain-plagued $200,000 DFS Classic grass-court tennis tournament in England.
All eight third-round matches were lost to the weather Thursday and two third-round matches and the quarterfinals were washed out Friday. Tournament officials have set those matches for Saturday.
Jankovic beat the rain and 16th-seed Maria Kirilenko 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to gain the tournament quarterfinals. She will next face No. 6 Alona Bondarenko, who beat Vania King 6-1, 6-3 on Friday.
Fourth-seeded Na Li and No. 8 Mara Santangelo also advanced Friday. Li defeated Yuliana Fedak 6-4, 6-4 and Santangelo claimed the win when Julia Vakulenko retired with an ankle injury.
Also Friday, fifth-seeded Marion Bartoli ran past Angelique Kerber 6-2, 6-0 and Elena Likhovtseva beat Ayumi Morita 6-2, 6-0.
Among the third-round matches rained out Friday were No. 1-seeded Maria Sharapova going against Tamira Paszek and No. 3 Daniela Hantuchova meeting 15th-seeded Eleni Daniilidou.
