Brad Penny (8-1) stayed unbeaten in his last five starts by allowing the Mets a run on seven hits in seven innings. Jorge Sosa (6-2) took a shutout into the fifth, but gave up six runs on eight hits in 5 2/3. Sosa was coming off his best outing of the year, in which he threw eight shutout innings against Detroit.

The Dodgers faced a 1-0 deficit in the fifth, but Betemit tied it with a leadoff homer. A single by Matt Kemp and a triple by Rafael Furcal put Los Angeles in front and Juan Pierre singled in Furcal with the third run of the inning.

Los Angeles added three more in the sixth with Betemit driving home Nomar Garciaparra with a single and then scoring on a base hit by Kemp. Tony Abreu drove in Kemp with a double to make it 6-1.
