BARCELONA, Spain, June 13 (UPI) -- No. 1-seeded Francesca Schiavone won just two games Wednesday and was ousted from the inaugural Barcelona KIA tennis tournament in Spain.
Schiavone was given a bye into the second round of the $145,000 tournament because of her high seeding but qualifier Agnes Szavay obviously wasn't impressed and dispatched Schiavone, 6-1, 6-1.
Fifth-seeded Lourdes Dominguez Lino was also upset, dropping a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Edina Gallovits.
The other seeded players played to form Wednesday with No. 3 Emilie Loit taking out Camille Pin, 6-1, 6-1; fourth-seeded Kaia Kanepi beating Maria Emilia Salerni, 6-3, 6-0; No. 6 Meghann Shaughnessy topping Laura Pous Tio, 7-5, 6-4; seventh-seeded Virginie Razzano holding off Melinda Czink, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-2; and No. 8 Flavia Pennetta dismissing Tatjana Malek, 6-3, 6-4.
In a second-round match between two unseeded players, Alla Kudryavtseva beat Emmanuelle Gagliardi, 6-0, 6-4.
Thursday's quarterfinals pair Loit against Pennetta, Kanepi versus Gallovits, Shaughnessy with Szavay and Razzano against Kudryavtseva.
