MEMPHIS, June 12 (UPI) -- The wife of Memphis golfer John Daly claimed he scratched his own face last week and blamed it on her to cover up a sexual assault he perpetrated on her.

Sherrie Daly claimed her husband, who sought a protective order against her to bar her from contacting him or the couple's 3-year-old son after alleging that she attacked him with a knife, scratched his own face after drunkenly assaulting her early Friday morning, the Memphis Commercial Appeal reported Tuesday.

Court papers filed by Sherrie Daly, who is seeking a restraining order, exclusive use and possession of the couple's Memphis home, temporary custody of their child and continued financial support, claim the golfer sexually assaulted her, causing unspecified injuries and injured himself to cover up the incident.

"Mother would show that Father inflicted injury upon himself by scratching his face," Sherrie Daly said in the Circuit Court petition, the newspaper reported. "Father accused Mother of attacking him with a knife and stabbing him in an attempt to cover up his sexual assault of Mother."

John Daly denied the claims.

"It's just not true, Bub. It's just not true. That's all I can say," he told the Commercial Appeal.
