HALLE, Germany, June 11 (UPI) -- World No. 1 Roger Federer Monday withdrew from the first grass court tournament of the season, one day after dropping a tough French Open final.
Federer issued a statement saying he wouldn't be playing in the $800,000 Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany, for fear of injury.
"In an attempt to prevent injury after the long final in Paris, I cannot defend my title at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle," he said. "I look forward to returning in 2008."
Federer is a four-time defending champion of the Gerry Weber Open, which kicks off the grass-court section of the tennis calendar.
Federer lost a 3-hour, 10-minute match to Rafael Nadal in the men's singles finals of the clay-court French Open on Sunday. The 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory marked Nadal's third consecutive French Open title and second straight year he beat Federer in the final.
