MONTREAL, June 10 (UPI) -- Rookie sensation Lewis Hamilton won a Formula One race in only his sixth try Sunday, capturing the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.
Hamilton, an Englishman and the first black driver in the history of the series, had finished no worse than third in the opening five races of the season.
He won his first Formula One pole Saturday, opened a three-second advantage after only five laps, and wound up winning by 4.3 seconds over Nick Heidfeld.
The margin of victory would have been much larger had there not been four full-course cautions that allowed Hamilton's challengers to draw closer.
Hamilton is the first rookie to win a Formula One race since Juan Montoya did it in 2001.
The win moved Hamilton into the lead in the championship race with 48 points. Two-time defending champion Fernando Alonso has 40.
