WEST DES MOINES, Iowa, June 8 (UPI) -- Leading money winner Jay Haas grabbed the lead after Friday's opening round of the Principal Charity Classic at West Des Moines, Iowa, firing a 6-under 65.

Dave Eichelberger, 63, was alone in second place at Glen Oaks Country Club with a 66, while Bob Gilder, Jim Thorpe, Mark James and David Edwards all shot 67.

Haas, with two victories this year on the Champions Tour, birdied the final hole as he bounced back from a disappointing finish last week. He held the lead going into the final round of the Boeing Championship but wound up tied for fifth after shooting a 73.

Eichelberger is seeking his first victory since 2002.
