Astros' Berkman will appeal suspension

NEW YORK, June 8 (UPI) -- Houston first baseman Lance Berkman will appeal a two-game suspension for "inappropriate" actions in Tuesday's game at Colorado.

The suspension was announced Friday in a release by the Major League Baseball office in New York.

Baseball's vice president of on-field operations, Bob Watson, told the Houston Chronicle about the appeal, which was to begin with Friday night's game at Chicago against the White Sox.

Berkman was ejected in the eighth inning after arguing a checked-swing call.

When the benches cleared in the ninth after Colorado reliever Manny Corpas hit Carlos Lee with a pitch, Berkman came back out onto the field to join in.

Watson was asked if the suspension was because of Berkman's ejection or for running on the field afterwards. "All I will tell you is we took his actions into account on the field and his return to the field after he was ejected," he said.
