MEMPHIS, June 7 (UPI) -- Adam Scott and Fredrik Jacobson overcame a difficult course Thursday to share the first-round lead of the Stanford St. Jude Championship at Memphis.
Each turned in a 3-under 67 at the TPC-Southwind layout to lead Retief Goosen and Brian Gay by a shot.
Scott Verplank, Gavin Coles and Duffy Waldorf shared fifth place at 1-under 69, as only seven players broke par in a perfect tune-up for next week's U.S. Open.
Among those at 70 were David Toms, Justin Leonard and John Daly -- who after making a triple bogey on his third hole of the day ran off five straight birdies.
Jacobson posted his score early in the day and Scott -- who ranks seventh in the yearlong points chase -- came in late in the afternoon with a round that included an eagle at the par-5 third.
The first-round scores were some of the highest of the year.
Defending U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy shot a 78 and former British Open winner Todd Hamilton had a 79. Eleven players failed to break 80.
