CHICAGO, June 7 (UPI) -- A continuing back injury could cause Chicago White Sox third baseman Joe Crede to miss the rest of the 2007 baseball season.
Crede was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday after seeing two back specialists in recent weeks and an MRI this week. The latest examination indicated Crede has fluid irritating the sciatic nerves in his back.
The 29-year-old Crede has played through pain since suffering two herniated discs in the 2004 season.
Dr. Frank Phillips in Chicago and Dr. Andrew Dosett in Texas recommended a strengthening program when Crede bypassed microsurgery last winter.
"They both really strongly believed that, so we went that route," Crede said on the team's Web site. "It's just a matter of it's still flaring up. We just want to rid the problem, that's basically what we want to do."
This season, Crede is batting .216 with four home runs and 22 RBI in 167 at bats. He is a career .259 hitter over eight seasons, all with Chicago.
