SAN ANTONIO, June 6 (UPI) -- Playoff seasoned San Antonio and upstart Cleveland begin the NBA Finals Thursday night with Tim Duncan and LeBron James in the spotlight.
Duncan has twice won the league's MVP award and three times has been named MVP of the finals. James is coming off a breakthrough series in which he guided the Cavaliers to a conference title over Detroit.
Game 1 begins at 9 p.m. EDT on San Antonio's home court.
Gregg Popovich will be trying to coach the Spurs to their fourth NBA crown in nine seasons, having won two-thirds of his games in a 12-year tenure. He will face off against one of his former assistants, Mike Brown.
The Spurs, despite having a superstar cast that includes Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, are best known at playoff time for their defense.
That defense, however, will be put to the test against James -- who showed he can take over a game in clutch situations by scoring his team's final 25 points in a double overtime win at Detroit in the fifth game of the Eastern Conference title series.
