Henin versus Serena Tuesday at French Open

PARIS, June 4 (UPI) -- The women's quarterfinals Tuesday at the French Open will feature a showdown between top-ranked Belgian Justine Henin and American Serena Williams.

The eighth-seeded Williams is 6-3 lifetime against the top-seeded Henin, including wins in their last two meetings. The American beat her Belgian opponent in a marquee final in Miami earlier this season.

Henin won their lone meeting at the French Open, back in the 2003 in a semifinal.

Henin is a five-time Grand Slam champion, including three French Open titles in the last four years. She's won the last two French Opens, including a victory over Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova in last year's finale.

Williams owns eight major titles, including one at the Australian Open in January and her lone French Open crown in 2002.

The women's semifinals will be held Thursday with those winners to meeting in the final Saturday.

Truex Jr. wins rain-delayed 400-mile race

DOVER, Del., June 4 (UPI) -- Martin Truex Jr. won the rain-delayed Autism Speaks 400 at the Dover International Speedway Monday, finishing 7.355 seconds ahead of pole-sitter Ryan Newman.

The race had been delayed almost 24 hours after rain washed out Sunday's race.

Newman led 27 laps, but Carl Edwards, winner of the Busch Series race Saturday, passed Bobby Labonte and Dale Earnhardt Jr. for second place with Truex closing. Newman retook the lead on Lap 56 and held it through the second caution flag on Lap 67.

Newman's lead was 1.014 seconds over Edwards and Earnhardt after 80 laps. Truex was up to seventh place and Tony Stewart had moved into the Top 10. With four miles to go, Truex' lead was 6.119 seconds. There were no caution flags over the final laps.

Edwards, Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth completed the Top 5.


Donovan reportedly wants out of Magic deal

GAINESVILLE, Fla., June 4 (UPI) -- Two University of Florida athletic department sources say basketball coach Billy Donovan is having second thoughts about taking an NBA position.

The sources confirmed Donovan, who signed a five-year contract Friday to coach the Orlando Magic, is now seeking to back out of the deal and stay in Gainesville to continue coaching the Gators, WKMG-TV, Orlando, reported Monday.

Donovan reportedly told Magic officials that felt rushed into the decision and now regrets his choice. Florida Today said representatives of the team's management are believed to be on their way to Gainesville to discuss the matter with Donovan and try to convince him to change his mind for a second time.

Donovan, who took home two consecutive national titles over the past two seasons as coach of the Gators, was signed to a $27.5 million deal with the Orlando Magic.


Colorado's Hawpe, Boston's Pedroia Players of Week

NEW YORK, June 4 (UPI) -- Colorado Rockies right fielder Brad Hawpe and Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia were named Monday as baseball's Players of the Week.

Hawpe had a .955 slugging percentage for the period ending June 3. He led the NL for the week with eight RBI and a .571 on-base percentage. The left-handed batter batted .455 with three homers and eight runs scored. He homered in three straight games.

Pedroia, a rookie, had a .609 batting average with an .870 slugging percentage and a .640 on-base percentage in six games.

Pedroia hit six doubles, scored three runs and had six RBI during the period. In a three-game weekend series against the New York Yankees, he was 8-for-14 with five RBI.
