Piniella suspended for four games

NEW YORK, June 4 (UPI) -- Chicago Cubs Manager Lou Piniella was suspended for four games for his altercation with umpire Mark Wegner, Major League Baseball said Monday.

Piniella was suspended indefinitely over the weekend and missed Sunday's game. The decision by MLB Executive Vice President John McHale Jr. to make the suspension for four games means the Cubs will also be without the manager for the three-game series at Milwaukee.

A release from MLB also said Piniella was fined an undisclosed amount.

Piniella is expected to return to the dugout for Thursday's game in Atlanta.

The Cubs said bench coach Allan Trammell will manage the team during Piniella's suspension.

Umpiring crew chief Bruce Froemming reported that Piniella made contact with Wegner while arguing over a play at third base in Saturday's game.
