HOUSTON, June 1 (UPI) -- Juan Encarnacion and Gary Bennett hit back-to-back homers in a seven-run ninth inning Friday night, giving the St. Louis Cardinals an 8-1 win over Houston.
Encarnacion homered to left off Chad Qualls (4-3), breaking a 1-1 tie. Bennett hit the next pitch from Qualls out to left as well.
It was the first home run of the season for both players.
The inning continued with Scott Spiezio delivering a two-run double, pitcher Kip Wells driving in a run with a pinch-hit single and Bennett -- in his second at-bat of the frame -- bringing in two more with a double.
St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright gave up a run on four hits over seven innings, but the win went to Ryan Franklin (2-0). He gave up a hit and a walk in the eighth.
It was the Cardinals' third straight win.
