Cardinals put Molina on the DL

DENVER, May 30 (UPI) -- St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a fractured left wrist.

He is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

The 24-year-old Molina was struck by a foul tip in the third inning of Tuesday night's game at Colorado. He stayed in the game until the fourth when his pain was too great.

On its Web site, the reigning World Series champions noted he has a non-displaced fracture. The joint will be placed in a splint and immobilized.

The injury occurred in a similar area in 2005, when he was struck on his left hand by a pitch while he was batting.

The former Gold Glove winner is batting .273 with one home run and 12 RBI in 128 at-bats.He has a .336 on-base percentage and a .344 slugging percentage.

The Cardinals have purchased the contract of catcher Brian Esposito from Class AAA Memphis to fill Molina's roster spot.
