Romero keeps Senior PGA lead

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C., May 25 (UPI) -- Eduardo Romero shot a 2-under 70 Friday and increased his lead to two shots midway through the Senior PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, S.C.

Romero successfully battled the breezes that swept across the course to finish the second round at 6-under 138.

Joe Ozaki (71) was alone in second at 140, Nick Price (70) was third at 141 and Denis Watson (71) stood fourth at 142.

Romero, from Argentina, was the lone international player to win on the Champions Tour last year, but there were no Americans among the top four at the 36-hole mark of this major championship.

The top Americans were Jay Haas (71) and Brad Bryant (72), who were tied for fifth at 143.

The senior players face a stiff challenge with a course that earned a reputation for difficulty when it was the site of the 1991 Ryder Cup.

"I know this course is very hard," Romero said. "You have to be very patient, very quiet. I know two strokes is nothing on this course. You have to play it very careful."

Of those who were under par, only Price won a major title on the regular tour -- and he won three of them.
