Illinois hoopster jailed

CHAMPAIGN, Ill., May 25 (UPI) -- Illinois guard Jamar Smith began serving two weeks in jail after pleading guilty to felony driving under the influence of alcohol.

The 20-year-old native of Peoria also will serve two years probation for a Feb. 12 car accident in Champaign that severely injured teammate Brian Carlwell, 19, of Maywood, Ill.

Carlwell suffered a bruise on the brain.

The plea was entered Thursday before Champaign County Judge Rich Klaus.

The Campaign News-Gazette reported Smith was taken into custody following his brief appearance.

He also was fined $850, ordered to perform 100 hours of community service, attend a victim impact panel and complete at least 75 hours of substance abuse treatment.
