ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., May 24 (UPI) -- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays Thursday placed catcher Josh Paul on the 15-day disabled list with a left-elbow sprain.
Paul suffered the injury in Saturday night's game against the Florida Marlins during a home plate collision with Marlins catcher Miguel Olivo.
The team had hoped Paul could avoid a trip to the DL after not using him at all in a three-game series against Seattle.
Paul was batting .245 with no home runs and five RBI in 49 at-bats this season.
His roster spot has been taken by catcher Shawn Riggans, who was recalled from Triple-A Durham.
Riggans hit .295 (31-for-105) in 29 games for the Bulls with nine doubles, four home runs and 14 RBI.
He made his major league debut with the Devil Rays last season as a September call-up, when he batted .172 and drove in one run.
The roster move was the Rays' fourth in the last 17 days.
