Giambi meets with MLB brass
NEW YORK, May 23 (UPI) -- New York Yankees slugger Jason Giambi Wednesday met with representatives of Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, his agent confirmed.
Arn Tellem told The New York Times that Giambi met with the officials at the commissioner's office.
"There was a meeting," Tellem told the newspaper via e-mail. "Other than that, there is no further comment."
The New York Daily News reported Wednesday that Giambi failed an amphetamines test administered by MLB within the last year.
Citing unidentified sources, the Daily News said the test outcome has subjected Giambi to additional drug testing.
Giambi came close last week to admitting he has used steroids but did not mention he had been caught using other drugs, the Daily News said.
"I was wrong for doing that stuff," Giambi told USA Today. "What we should have done a long time ago was stand up -- players, ownership, everybody -- and said, 'We made a mistake.'"
It was unlikely Giambi would be asked about the amphetamines test in the meeting at the commissioner's office, the Daily News said, because MLB's amphetamines policy keeps a first positive test secret.
Giambi refused to comment on the report before Tuesday's loss to Boston.
Giambi was one of nine MLB players to testify in 2003 before a federal grand jury in connection with an investigation into the use of performance-enhancing substances by major leaguers.
Keyshawn Johnson retires from NFL
LOS ANGELES, May 23 (UPI) -- Three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson has retired from the NFL and accepted a sportscasting position with ESPN.
Johnson announced his retirement during a news conference at the University of Southern California, where he played before the New York Jets made him the No. 1 pick of the 1996 NFL draft.
ESPN in a release confirmed that Johnson was joining the network.
Johnson, who turns 35 in July, was recently released by the Carolina Panthers. He was the team's No. 2 receiver last season, catching 70 passes for 815 yards and four touchdowns.
During his 11-year NFL career, Johnson had 814 receptions for 10,571 yards and 64 touchdowns. He played for the Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dallas Cowboys and Panthers.
Officials: Henry didn't fail drug test
CINCINNATI, May 23 (UPI) -- Officials in Kentucky Wednesday said Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry didn't fail a drug test as had been reported earlier this week.
Some Cincinnati-area news outlets, quoting a Kentucky prosecutor, said Henry had failed a drug test. His agent denied the reports and the Bengals said not all the information was in, and conclusions were premature.
The Kentucky Division of Probation and Parole Wednesday issued a statement refuting the allegations, saying "repeated referrals to our office by the Kenton County Attorneys office were wrong."
"Our office did, however, receive results of a drug test conducted on Henry today and those results were negative," the statement said.
Had the test been positive, Henry could have been ruled in violation of his probation and sentenced to jail. He is on probation for a 2006 conviction in Florida for carrying a concealed firearm.
The wide receiver already faces an eight-game suspension by the NFL this season for a series of off-the-field incidents.
V. Williams upset in Istanbul second round
ISTANBUL, Turkey, May 23 (UPI) -- Fourth-seeded Venus Williams was upset in second-round play Wednesday at the $200,000 Istanbul Cup clay-court tennis tournament.
Williams, who won at Istanbul two years ago, was ousted in straight sets by Aravane Rezai, 6-4, 6-4. Rezai had won just five previous matches this year.
Second-seeded Elena Dementieva and No. 3 Patty Schnyder advanced to the quarterfinals with straight-set victories Wednesday. Dementieva stopped Jelena Kostanic Tosic, 6-3, 6-3, and Schnyder was a 6-4, 6-1, winner over Vania King.
Also in second-round play, fifth-seeded Alona Bondarenko needed a third-set tiebreaker to get past Anastasija Sevastova, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5); No. 7 Agnieszka Radwanska sailed past Romina Oprandi, 6-1, 6-0; Meghann Shaughnessy whipped Ekaterina Afinogenova, 6-1, 6-3; and Catalina Castano overcame Ekaterina Dzehalevich, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Quarterfinals play was set for Thursday for the French Open tune up.
