Top seeds advance in Strasbourg tournament

STRASBOURG, France, May 23 (UPI) -- Top seed Amelie Mauresmo lost just five games Wednesday in moving into the quarterfinals of the $175,000 Strasbourg International tennis tournament in France.

Mauresmo, ranked No. 5 in the world, posted a 6-4, 6-1, victory over Varvara Lepchenko in qualifying for the quarterfinals of the clay-court tournament. She is to play ninth-seeded Emilie Loit -- who Wednesday defeated Lilia Osterloh, 6-1, 6-0 -- in Thursday's quarterfinals.

No. 2 seed Jelena Jankovic, looking for her second tournament title in two weeks, also made it to the quarters Wednesday, beating Tamarine Tanasugarn, 6-3, 7-5. Jankovic next draws Maria Elena Camerin, who beat Aiko Nakamura, 6-3, 6-2.

Also Wednesday, fourth-seeded Na Li took out Vera Dushevina, 6-2, 6-3; No. 5 Marion Bartoli beat Tatjana Malek, 6-3, 6-3; sixth-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues eliminated Alicia Molik, 6-2, 6-4; and Elena Vesnina won, 6-1, 6-4, over Caroline Maes.

Na and Medina Garrigues are paired in the quarterfinals, as are Bartoli and Vesnina.
