Curlin nips Street Sense to win Preakness

BALTIMORE, May 19 (UPI) -- Curlin, third in the Kentucky Derby, caught Street Sense at the wire Saturday to win the $1 million Preakness Stakes.

Ridden by Robby Albarado, Curlin redeemed himself with the victory in the second leg of racing's Triple Crown at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.

The chestnut colt went into the Kentucky Derby unbeaten in three starts, including the Arkansas Derby, and was the favorite for the Run for the Roses.

Albarado was able to rally Curlin in deep stretch and catch Street Sense at the wire to win by a head. Hard Spun held on for third.

Completing the order of finish for the 132nd Preakness Stakes was C P West, Circular Quay, King of the Roxy, Mint Slewlep, Xchanger and Flying First Class.

The Preakness win was worth $600,000 to bring Curlin's career earnings to just over $1.6 million. This was Curlin's fourth win in five starts.

Matteson, Imada co-lead AT&T Classic

DULUTH, Ga., May 19 (UPI) -- Ryuji Imada put his approach shot within inches at the 18th hole and birdied to tie Troy Matteson for the third-round lead at the AT&T Classic in Georgia.

Imada also made a 50-foot birdie putt at the 16th as he picked up two shots in three holes to join Matteson at 13-under-par 203.

Both players had a 3-under 69 in Saturday's third round to extend their overnight lead from one shot to two.

Columbian star Camilo Villegas used a seven-foot birdie putt at No. 16 to pull within two strokes of the lead on the way to shooting a 4-under 68. He was alone in third place at 11-under 205.

Master champion Zach Johnson parred his last nine holes for a 69 and was tied for fourth place with Lee Janzen (67) and Matt Kuchar (64) at 10-under 206.


Ottawa wins NHL Eastern Conference semifinal

BUFFALO, N.Y., May 19 (UPI) -- Daniel Alfredsson scored at 9:32 of overtime Saturday afternoon as Ottawa beat Buffalo, 3-2, to win the NHL Eastern Conference semifinal series, 4-1.

The victory gives Ottawa its first-ever Stanley Cup final appearance.

Second period goals by Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza helped Ottawa take a 2-1 lead after two periods, but Buffalo's Maxim Afinogenov tied the contest, 2-2, at 10:58 of the third to create the overtime.

Heatley added two assists, and goalie Ray Emery stopped 27 of 29 Buffalo shots for the Senators, who had built a 3-0 series lead.

Top-seeded Buffalo won Game 4, 3-2, Wednesday night to avert a four-game sweep.Tthe Sabres, who won this year's Presidents' Trophy by compiling the NHL's best regular season record, were knocked out of the Stanley Cup chase in the Eastern semifinals for the second straight year.


Gilder leads Hoch at seniors Regions Classic

HOOVER, Ala., May 19 (UPI) -- Bob Gilder shot a 6-under 66 Saturday to move ahead of Scott Hoch after two rounds of the seniors Regions Charity Classic in Alabama.

Gilder is 10-under-par 134 heading into the final round.

The six-time PGA Tour winner is after his 10th victory on the Champions Tour. He had five birdies, a bogey and an eagle at the par-five 16th Saturday.

Hoch, a winner two weeks ago at the FedEx Kinko's Classic, had a 1-under-par 71. He was two shots back at 8-under 136. He's seeking his first back-to-back wins on the Champions Tour.

Hale Irwin, the all-time Champions Tour wins leader, was in third at 137 following a second-round 68.

Zimbabwe's Denis Watson (66) shared fourth place with Fuzzy Zoeller (70) at 138.
