BALTIMORE, May 19 (UPI) -- Curlin, third in the Kentucky Derby, caught Street Sense at the wire Saturday to win the $1 million Preakness Stakes.
Ridden by Robby Albarado, Curlin redeemed himself with the victory in the second leg of racing's Triple Crown at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
The chestnut colt went into the Kentucky Derby unbeaten in three starts, including the Arkansas Derby, and was the favorite for the Run for the Roses.
Albarado was able to rally Curlin in deep stretch and catch Street Sense at the wire to win by a head. Hard Spun held on for third.
Completing the order of finish for the 132nd Preakness Stakes was C P West, Circular Quay, King of the Roxy, Mint Slewlep, Xchanger and Flying First Class.
The Preakness win was worth $600,000 to bring Curlin's career earnings to just over $1.6 million. This was Curlin's fourth win in five starts.
