NBA suspends Stoudemire, Diaw, and Horry

NEW YORK, May 15 (UPI) -- San Antonio forward Robert Horry was suspended two games and Phoenix forwards Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw one game each by the NBA Tuesday.

The suspensions are for the Western Conference semifinals starting with Game 5 on Wednesday.

The penalties followed a flagrant foul call on Horry, who delivered a forearm to Suns guard Steve Nash with 18.2 seconds left in Monday's 104-98 Phoenix victory at San Antonio, evening the best-of-seven series.

Horry was suspended for flagrantly fouling Nash and hitting Raja Bell above the shoulders with a forearm. Stoudemire and Diaw were suspended for leaving "the immediate vicinity of their bench" during a melee.

Stoudemire is averaging a team-best 23.9 points and 12.1 rebounds per game in the playoffs. Diaw is averaging 7.2 points. Horry, playing in his 15th straight playoffs, is averaging 6.4 points this postseason.

Dwyane Wade had surgery on shoulder and leg

MIAMI, May 15 (UPI) -- Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade had surgery Tuesday on his left shoulder and left leg, the NBA team said.

The team announcement described the operations as "successful" but there was no timetable set for Wade's being able to play. The procedures were done at Baptist Doctors Hospital of Miami by Dr. Harlan Selesnick.

The operations were to repair Wade's dislocated shoulder and to remove damaged tissue and repair his left patella tendon.

Wade missed 31 games this past season because of injury but still led the Heat in scoring with a franchise-record 27.4 points per game. He also led the team in assists (384) and steals (107).

Wade was selected to the All-NBA third team this season. He's played in 264 NBA games -- all with Miami -- and has career averages of 23.8 points, five rebounds and 6.4 assists.


Serena moves into third round at Italian Masters

ROME, May 15 (UPI) -- Serena Williams needed just 76 minutes Tuesday to earn a third-round slot at the $1.34 million Italian Masters clay-court tennis tournament.

Williams, who is seeded eighth in the tournament she won in 2002, whipped past Michaella Krajicek 6-4, 6-1 to improve to 17-2 on the year.

Also qualifying for third-round play was 14th-seeded Patty Schnyder, who had little trouble in a 6-1, 6-2 match with Vasilisa Bardina; No. 15 Katarina Srebotnik, who was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Martina Muller; and Tathiana Garbin, who defeated Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

Italian Mara Santangelo gave the home crowd a reason to cheer in a 6-2, 6-0 romp over Akiko Morigami, who last week collected her first WTA Tour title. Santangelo next faces second-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo opens her tournament Wednesday against Samantha Stosur, who was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Francesca Schiavone on Tuesday.


Lakers' Odom has shoulder surgery

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., May 15 (UPI) -- Los Angeles Lakers forward Lamar Odom underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder Tuesday, the NBA team said.

Doctors repaired a torn labrum in Odom's shoulder. The forward was expected to be in a sling for about 10 days before beginning rehabilitation. The team said Odom is expected to be fully recovered before the team reports for training camp in October.

The Lakers said the 40-minute procedure was performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum at the Kerlan Jobe Surgery Center in Los Angeles.

Odom averaged 15.9 points, 9.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists in 56 games with Los Angeles last season.
