, May 11 (UPI) -- Williams fails another drug test
NEW YORK, May 11 (UPI) -- Former Miami Dolphins running back Rick Williams tested positive for marijuana and cannot seek re-instatement into the NFL until September.
ESPN.com reported Friday the former first-round draft pick tested positive in April.
If substantiated, it would be his fifth violation of the substance-abuse policy and likely means his playing days as a Dolphin are over.
Williams left the team after a league suspension in 2006. Other suspensions came in December 2003, July 2004 and December 2004.
Just last month, Williams told ESPN Radio he had not smoked marijuana in "maybe three years."
In that interview, Williams said he thought he had "a pretty good shot" at being reinstated.
Neither the Dolphins nor the league, through spokesman Greg Aiello, had any comment, citing the confidentiality of a player's status in the substance-abuse program.
Williams has rushed for 7,097 yards in six NFL seasons.
Hingis withdraws from the Italian Open
ROME, May 11 (UPI) -- Martina Hingis has withdrawn from next week's Italian Open Tennis Tournament in Rome because of a lingering back injury.
The ailment affected the former world No. 1 player Thursday in a 6-4, 6-0 loss to 13th-seeded Patty Schnyder in the third round of German Open in Berlin.
"I've got to make a decision soon on what to do about my future," she said after her loss in a posting on the WTA Tour's Web site. "I will have to see how it goes (but) I don't have a lot of time. I haven't felt my best physically for a couple of weeks now, and I need to work on that."
Hingis also has a hip ailment.
"I haven't been able to do much conditioning work and I was missing the strength."
She admitted that she might not be back in time for the French Open, which starts May 28.
The French Open is the only Grand Slam the 26-year-old Hingis has never won.
Mauresmo beaten at German Open
BERLIN, May 11 (UPI) -- Former world No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo Friday lost, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, to Ukrainian Julia Vakulenko in the quarterfinals of the German Open in Berlin.
The match was completed after being suspended Thursday by darkness and rain.
"I'm going directly to Rome and I hope that I'll be able to get as much practice as possible on the courts," said the second-seeded Mauresmo, whose recent court time has been limited after an appendectomy in late February.
She is entered in next week's Italian Open.
The former Wimbledon champion won this tournament in 2001 and 2004 and was runner-up in 1998.
The quarterfinal between top-ranked Justine Henin and Jelena Jankovic was suspended until Saturday because of darkness.
Earlier, Henin completed a 6-1, 6-3 third-round rout of Maria Elena Camerin, while third-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova topped No. 7 and defending Berlin winner Nadia Petrova, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
Serbia's Ana Ivanovic also is a semifinalist.
Report: McNair hit with a DUI
NASHVILLE, May 11 (UPI) -- Baltimore Ravens quarterback Steve McNair was arrested for drunken driving in Nashville -- even though he wasn't behind the wheel.
The 12-year veteran was a passenger in his 2003 Dodge pickup truck when it was stopped by police for traveling 45 mph in a 35 mph zone Wednesday, the Baltimore Sun reported Friday.
The driver -- McNair's brother-in-law, Jamie Cartwright -- was arrested for driving under the influence after failing a field sobriety test. McNair was charged with "DUI by consent" for letting Cartwright drive his vehicle while impaired, the Sun said.
"I was trying to act responsibly," McNair said in a statement released by the team. "I have to go through the court process now and I understand that."
McNair could get a maximum sentence of 11 months, 29 days in jail if convicted, the Sun said.
McNair was arrested in Nashville in May 2003 on charges of DUI and illegal gun possession. The charges were dismissed when a judge ruled evidence in the case was insufficient.
