CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 9 (UPI) -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. will announce his departure from the racing team created by his late father, The Charlotte Observer reported Wednesday.

The newspaper said Earnhardt will appear at a news conference in Mooresville, N.C., Thursday to announce his decision. There was no report as to where Earnhardt will go for the 2008 NASCAR season.

When Dale Earnhardt Sr. was killed during the 2001 Daytona 500, control of Dale Earnhardt Inc. was inherited by his widow Teresa. There have been reports of discontent between Earnhardt Jr. and his stepmother, and speculation has been heavy that he would leave the team.

Earnhardt Jr. won the 2004 Daytona 500 and was champion of the NASCAR Busch series in 1998 and 1999.
