Hingis upset victim in Berlin

BERLIN, May 10 (UPI) -- Patty Schnyder pulled off a surprise Thursday by ousting former champion Martina Hingis in the third round of the German Open.

Schnyder reached the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-0 decision over the former top-ranked player in the world.

No. 3 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova coasted into the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Martina Muller, while seventh-seed and defending champ Nadia Petrova defeated Elena Dementieva 6-3, 6-3.

Petrova will face Kuznetsova in Friday's quarterfinals.

Rain hampered play Thursday, and the match between No. 2 seed Amelie Mauresmo and Julia Vakulenko was postponed until Friday because of a lack of light. Maursemo was leading 6-2, 1-1.
