CHICAGO, May 9 (UPI) -- Jason Marquis gave up three hits in going the distance Wednesday night, boosting the Chicago Cubs to a 1-0 win over Pittsburgh.

The Pirates did not have a base runner against Marquis (5-1) until Don Kelly singled with one out in the sixth. Marquis walked none and struck out five as his earned run average dropped to 1.70.

A home run by Alfonso Soriano in the first inning gave Chicago its lone run, and it was enough for the Cubs to win their sixth game in seven outings.

Tom Gorzelanny (4-2) suffered the loss, allowing six hits in seven innings. Pittsburgh has lost four out of five.

The homer by Soriano extended his hitting streak to 17 games.
